I bought my first PC laptop more than 20 years ago and it didn’t have an optical drive. An optical drive back then was a must since I needed to burn my digital camera’s files on to a CD in order to submit it to a client. I have memories of going around the mall looking for an external optical drive. The one that I found used a USB 1.0 cable and needed to be plugged into an AC outlet.
Fast forward to today and my Dell Precision 5520 doesn’t have an optical drive. It’s normally isn’t a huge thing since I can now copy files onto a flash drive or send files via internet (if my internet connection is feeling cooperative on that day).
It wasn’t easy to purchase an external optical drive more than 20 years ago since very few stores had it in stock. It still wasn’t easy when I tried to buy one a couple of days ago because few stores still sell it.
I was forced to buy an external optical drive since there are certain software drivers that I need to install for my work. The internet that I have at work can sometimes be uncooperative and makes it difficult for me to download software drivers.
One of these days I know that external optical drives will no longer be readily available. I wonder if I’ll still need one when that happens.
