Dell Precision 5520 Mobile Workstation

When was the last time you encountered a piece of tech that made you sit up and take notice of how it made life easier for you? This happened to me almost two months ago when I started to use the Dell Precision 5520 mobile workstation.

I’ve mentioned in past social media posts about my Dell Precision 5520 mobile workstation and the most frequently asked question that I received was how much does it cost?

There is no fixed price for it. Why? Because you have the option to get it custom built according to your specs and budget. Think of being presented with a grocery list of options like which processor, display, RAM and you have to figure out what you need and what you can afford.

What are the specs of my Dell Precision 5520?

My unit has a 15.6″ UltraSharp UHD IGZO 4K (3840×2160) display. A 15.6″ laptop might sound bulky for some people. But its Infinity Edge gives my mobile workstation the size and form factor of a regular 14″ laptop. The display is gorgeous when it comes to color. It has a gamut of 100% Adobe RGB and supports 10-bit color.

Those who shoot video would enjoy using the Dell Premier Color software since it allows the use to seamlessly switch from Adobe RGB to DCI-PC, Rec. 709 or Rec. 601.

The video card is an Nvidia Quadro M1200M with 4G GDDR5.

There was an option to have two separate internal storage devices. But I opted for an 500GB M.2 PCIe Solid State Drive in order to better conserve battery power.

What really made me sit up and take notice about the Dell Precision 5520 mobile workstation was the option to have an Intel Xeon Mobile Processor. My unit has an Intel Xeon CPU E3-1505M v6 3.00GHz.

The Dell Precision 5520 comes standard with two USB 3.0 ports, a Thunderbolt 3 port, headphone jack and HDMI port.

How has it been working with the Dell Precision 5520 for almost the past two months?

I throw work at it and it just does it. It gobbles up RAW files during batch conversion. It’s a joy to post process and do color correction knowing that I’m using a great display monitor while working.

Dell Precision Optimizer software comes for free with Dell mobile and desktop workstations. It’s great how it automatically creates profile depending on the application that I am currently using to make my Dell Precision 5520 work better and more efficiently.

I was given a backpack with a rain cover when I got my Dell Precision 5520. I was told just in case I would like to bring it with me as I bike commute around Metro Manila. I didn’t think that it was a good idea two months ago. I’m now very grateful for the backpack because I find it hard not to bring my mobile workstation around with me.
